As a former science teacher I was always a fan of the scientific method. It was a great process for students to actually do science in order to learn by designing an experiment to deeply explore observations and develop/answer questions. The process itself was guided by inquiry, problem solving, and reflection. I fondly remember developing and testing out numerous hypotheses in the many science courses I took in high school and college.

This is my third summer offering maker education summer camps as part of a bigger program at a local school. During mornings (9 to 12 with a half hour recess), campers, grades Kindergarten through 6th grade, can choose from one of four enrichment classes: art, drama, games, foreign languages, computers, and in my case, maker camps. During the afternoons, all campers get together for typical camp activities – fun and games, field trips, water sports, silly competitions.

It is easy to forget, amid the near mania associated with college admissions and acceptance, that many students do not have the aptitude or indeed funding to attend college, and will need to work directly after 12th grade. This is obviously an important awareness to have as a teacher, because the workplace is currently very different from the classroom, yet we have an obligation to prepare our students not only for the academic rigors of college, but also for the realities of employment.

I’ve seem some good reporting on the study but also plenty of spinning of the findings by advocates (pro and con). In cases such as these, there is no substitute for actually doing the work and reading the study.

For example, it has been shown that aging adults who speak more than one language have less likelihood of developing dementia. We’re in the middle of a guided math lesson and my students are scattered around the room like two dozen Cheerios that just exploded out of their box. Some are in groups, backs arched over skill-specific games, giggling and rolling dice. Others are hidden, tucked away in cozy nooks within the room, exploring and discovering in pairs.
