Not All Screen Time Is Created Equal

Catlin Tucker

As a parent, I am fiercely protective of my children. I want them to be kids. I want them to play sports, get lost in great books, collect bugs in our backyard, and engage with one another creating art projects, choreographing dance numbers, and playing good old fashioned board games. I often feel these traditional pastimes are less attractive than the pull of the screen.

Why students love a game-based learning experience

Neo LMS

For as long as children have preferred playing to sitting quietly and learning their ABCs, preschool teachers have been craftily devising games as Trojan horses to teach them concepts such as shapes, letter recognition, colors, seasons and relationships. Gamification in learning is an established trend, and uses the core elements of what make games fun – mastery, narrative, instant feedback, competition, and reward, to create new ways for learners to internalize information.

Learning is the Reward

A Principal's Reflections

Let’s face it, school, as we know it is driven by grades as the main reflection of what students do, or do not, know. What has resulted is a rat race of sorts where many kids and parents alike have their eye on the prize. The prize in this case is either a coveted letter or number grade that is celebrated above the most important aspect of education – whether a student actually learned and can apply this newly constructed knowledge in meaningful ways.

Coding or Critical Thinking?

EdTech4Beginners

As the Hour of Code again approaches, I ponder the efficacy of encouraging all schools to participate under the banner of coding. To be involved in EdTech is to interact with articles , TED Talks , and apps that encourage coding. Still, I am not convinced that all students need to focus on coding per se as much as they will benefit from the skills that are acquired while learning how to code.

Activating Student Thinking through Strategic Annotations

Teachers are always looking for ways to facilitate deeper student learning through reading. The true goal of any classroom is to prepare students not only for comprehension, but also higher-order analysis where they feel comfortable interpreting content and using it in new ways. Getting there, however, requires that students understand how to practice metacognition and critical thinking while reading; teachers cannot simply hand students text and expect them to do so.
